the energy and hedonistic anxiety of 00’s indie sleeze, with driving guitar riffs and danceable rhythms undercutting lyricism that is devious in its simplicity
If there’s one thing you can count on from the north-west of England, it’s damn good indie. Whether it’s Merseyside’s Red Rum Club and Miles Kane, or Manchester’s The 1975 and The Courteneers, if you like indie, you’re in the perfect place. The latest band etching their name in that storied history comes in the form of four-piece Retroview.
Earlier this month, the band dropped their debut single, ‘What You Waiting For’, and with it brought the energy and hedonistic anxiety of 00’s indie sleeze, with driving guitar riffs and danceable rhythms undercutting lyricism that is devious in its simplicity; even the band sound almost breathless in an attempt to keep up with the track’s hurtling, reckless pace.
Whilst the tracks feels like it takes nods from the youthful exuberance of early Arctic Monkeys, there’s a polish and complexity here that makes the band stand out far beyond the shadow of their influences, especially during a particularly funky little instrumental bridge that is buoyed by a groovy bass line. On top of that, the drumming throughout is actually astoundingly complex and deserves particular commendation.
Despite what the elitists may say, there is a certain charm to 00’s indie that impossible to deny, a jittering celebration of a death of innocence fuelled by booze, hormones, and a world just about holding itself together. And Retroview have tapped into that sentiment perfectly with this dangerously infectious indie club anthem; certainly, the sound here is far more polished and mature, but underneath the layers, Retroview are here to make you feel like it’s a night out in 2007, and boy are they good at it.
