EP REVIEW: Wull – Running Out

a sonic style that merges that indie rock backbone with elements of post-punk, psych rock, and Britpop; it’s a sound that revels in 90’s nostalgia, yet feels fantastically fresh and relevant

One of the freshest indie acts born from the north-west, the Liverpool-based Wull have steadily been building a reputation for powerful live performances, with only a song or two to their name. However, with their debut EP ‘Running Out’ dropping last month, it’s hard not to imagine all manner of success turning up at the feet of this incendiary band.

On the surface, Wull present themselves as no nonsense indie rockers, but don’t let that fool you. With a sound that sits firmly at the crossroads of Oasis and Fontaines DC, the band have crafted a sonic style that merges that indie rock backbone with elements of post-punk, psych rock, and Britpop; it’s a sound that revels in 90’s nostalgia, yet feels fantastically fresh and relevant.

Wull – A Liar’s Dream

The opening title track is a furious post-punk cut with charging bass lines, soaring choruses, and a fantastic atmospheric instrumental break towards the back end. ‘All You Can Be’ elevates things further with some ‘Be Here Now’ era Oasis style instrumentation, psychedelic tinged guitar included, and choruses that are begging for a stage as big as Knebworth.

Take Me There’ is a great break in momentum for the album, switching out the ferocious uptempo pace for a more dreamy, reverb soaked cut that shows some real vocal talent. Then, almost as if being slingshot, the EP launches into the final two track, with the closer of ‘A Liar’s Dream’ packing some feisty guitar licks and percussion that ducks and weaves, subtly adding surprising complexity around a powerhouse rhythmic core.

Wull – Running Out

And that’s the big takeaway from Wull’s EP; not only are they a band who know how to make a big indie banger, they are a collection of incredibly talented musicians who know how to inject character into their respective roles, bringing the music to life and adding their own personal stamp. You may be able to hear the influences, but ‘Running Out’ is firmly a Wull project.

With radio attention both sides of the Atlantic and sold out headline shows in the UK, it’s only a matter of time until things really get going for this outfit. Get on board now.

RATING: 79/100 – Mostly Very Good
