SINGLE REVIEW: danger dog – what if we get sick of each other?

Capturing the energy and passion of [Midwest Emo] easily, ‘what if we get sick of each other?’ is the two-step anthem the sweatiest basement venues of the UK have been waiting for.

Midwest emo. When you see those two words, usually you think of Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and many more of the states in that area. You probably don’t, instead, think of the West Midlands in the UK. You might have Chicago, but we have Birmingham. And whereas you might have American Football, we have danger dog

Born out of the West Midlands and currently based in Liverpool, the four piece established themselves properly in November 2022 with a rerelease of their debut single, ‘big z surf memorial’, a noodling, mathy track apparently inspired by the legendary 2007 animated movie ‘Surf’s Up’. With a catchy lead riff, a groovy bass tone throughout, and a wonderfully melancholic but sparkling vocal performance, danger dog truly do bring the sound of the Midwest to the UK.

This Friday, the outfit are finally treating us to their follow-up single, a simple, dreamy, and heartbreaking little cut entitled ‘what if we get sick of each other?’.

A track of two parts, the first half is a genuinely touching and emotive slow-burner, with weaving guitar passages that are gently framed with delicate reverb, playing away beneath an understated, grounded, and human vocal performance that truly captures the melancholy of the track. The brief choruses, punctuated by the ‘give a shit’ refrain, are fantastic injections of energy.

The back portion of the track, heralded by firecracker percussion, is an uptempo breeze through jangly riffs and bouncing bass lines, as danger dog grapples with a relationship in its death throes, even when there’s an irrepressible will to try and find some way out. It’s a cathartic moment with a suitably abrupt ending as the track hurtles towards the line ‘I said ‘we’re already sick of each other’’.

danger dog represent something that the UK alternative scene has been desperately needing; a band willing to wave that Midwest emo flag high, as opposed to sticking to the more alternative rock leanings that so many bands so. Capturing the energy and passion of that genre easily, ‘what if we get sick of each other?’ is the emo anthem the sweatiest basement venues of the UK have been waiting for, and trust me, that’s a very, very good thing.
