SINGLE REVIEW: Void Of Vision – Angel of Darkness

Void Of Vision are never ones to stick to the status quo; their talent makes their experimentation seem effortless. Whatever Void Of Vision is plotting, be certain that this marks another step on a band ready to go supernova

With the end of their Chronicles era in sight, following three EPs that redefined everything about the band from their sound to their style, Void Of Vision show zero signs of slowing down, and this week dropped a surprise release entitled ‘Angel of Darkness’, incorporating some kind of underlying lore into the band’s latest antics.

‘The human body known as Jack Bergin has been chosen for ascension’, declares the new figurehead of Australia’s best heavy outfit; Bergin is gone, and in his place, an ‘Angel of Darkness’ fronts Void Of Vision. Band members James McKendrick, Mitch Fairlie, and George Murphy are kitted out in leather and makeup, whilst frontman Bergin, or the body he has left behind, is transformed into some otherworldly figure, his face embellished with metallic spikes. Yet on this new track, it’s a joint effort from McKendrick and Bergin on taking the reins vocally.

McKendrick is no stranger to providing vocals for the outfit, such as on the band’s previous releases ‘If Only’ and ‘Saint Miserable’. However, here he is front and centre throughout, delivering his strongest performance to date on the pounding choruses whilst Bergin’s instantly recognisable stabbing screams intersect the track at various moments. Killer lyrics bring the effervescent verses to life (‘You know it’s hard when I’m so fucking sick of desire/’Cause that means that you’re not mine’), delivered by Bergin’s sultry snarling clean vocals that he has grown to truly master.

Void Of Vision – Angel of Darkness

Beneath the vocals, Void Of Vision provide instrumentation that feels perfect as the follow-up to Chronicles as an era, combining thunderous and unapologetic metalcore breakdowns with rave-inspired electronics, but also evolving it in ways that demonstrates that the band aren’t resting on their laurels; the verses sound, dare I say, delightfully a little eurobeat in nature, with thumping percussion and bass that harkens back to the hardcore scene of the 00’s.

It’s impressive how well Void Of Vision are able to blend their aggressive metalcore roots with genres that at first seem to be the polar opposite, but it’s very simple to understand how they manage it; this is a band who understands that these genres, at their foundations, both compel you to move. ‘Angel of Darkness’ is the perfect devilish exploration of this.

It’s a bold move, to start a new era in such a transformed manner, but Void Of Vision are never ones to stick to the status quo; their talent makes their experimentation seem effortless. Whatever Void Of Vision is plotting, be certain that this marks another step on a band ready to go supernova.

As their Angel of Darkness says, you won’t believe what happens next…
