SINGLE REVIEW: Thalia’s Grace – Comfort

a sublimely decadent and musically complex affair, with incredible musicianship and gorgeous melodies that weave together to produce something deeply musically relevant, yet startlingly unique in its splendour

Thalia’s Grace are a four-piece alternative rock band based out of Liverpool, and are one of the latest of many fantastic acts to have arisen out of the Merseyside region. Having met at university whilst studying music, the four musicians released their debut single ‘Second Hand Worry‘ back in 2022, and have gone on to perform sell-out shows at local venues such as The Jacaranda and EBGBS; certainly an accomplishment, and a statement of just how promising Thalia’s Grace are.

The band are dropping their latest track, ‘Comfort‘, on the 4th of August, a song which represents everything about this band that is exciting to listen to. The track is built around the sensation of being trapped within a relationship, whether platonic, familial, or romantic, and the feeling of having your joy stolen from you, yet continuing to seek it in other people.

Beneath the soft, folksy-indie surface, ‘Comfort‘ represents a sublimely decadent and musically complex affair, with incredible musicianship and gorgeous melodies that weave together to produce something deeply musically relevant, yet startlingly unique in its splendour. The vocals are somehow simultaneously tender and vulnerable, yet steadfast and unrepentant, perfectly encapsulating those aforementioned themes of the track. Completing the vocal soundscape are gorgeous yet subtle harmonies, especially during the bridge segment.

Driving, distorted riffs explode outwards into a sprawling and expansive solo that conjures an energy from the 70’s, whilst bass lines weave compelling grooves throughout that manage the balance of complexity versus musicality perfectly, enabling the track to feel both deeply catchy yet ambitious. Beneath all of that are shifting, off-kilter percussive patterns that swing between gently rattling folk tinged rhythms in the verses, to expansive, crashing waves in the choruses.

Vivid, empowering, and deeply human, ‘Comfort‘ culminates into a simply fantastic song that doesn’t compensate its own musical vision despite being wonderfully accessible and re-listenable track. Thalia’s Grace represent an outfit who are both incredibly talented musicians, and incredibly talented songwriters; very quickly it becomes easy to understand just why the band have taken off as well as they have, and furthermore, it becomes easy to imagine there being a very, very bright future for this band.

Comfort‘ by Thalia’s Grace releases 04/08/2023. The song can be presaved here.
